Extra fields a sports goods shop invoice needs

Sport and equipment type
Naming the sport and item, such as cricket bat English willow or badminton racket, makes it clear that the item is a sports good under the 5% entry and not fitness equipment taxed at 18%.
Size, weight or grade
Bats come in sizes and weights, balls in grades, rackets in grip sizes and string tension. These details confirm what the player ordered and support exchanges for the right size.
Per-piece or per-pair value for apparel
Jerseys, track pants and sports shoes follow the apparel and footwear thresholds. Printing the per-piece or per-pair price after discount shows why each line is taxed at 5% or 18%.
Team or club order reference
Schools, academies and clubs order kits in bulk. Their order number, team name and the personalisation required help invoicing, delivery and payment approval. It also records the agreed rate.
Customisation details
Printed names, numbers and logos on jerseys are common. Recording the customisation on the bill confirms that the goods were made to order and are not returnable.
Warranty or knock-in terms
Cricket bats need knocking in and some rackets carry frame warranties. Noting these terms on the invoice avoids disputes when a bat cracks or a frame breaks early.

GST rules that matter for a sports goods shop

Sports goods at 5%, fitness equipment at 18%

Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) places sports goods other than articles and equipment for general physical exercise of heading 9506 in the 5% schedule, together with gloves specially designed for use in sports under 4203 and fishing rods and tackle under 9507. Articles and equipment for general physical exercise, gymnastics and athletics, other than sports goods, remain at 18% under the same heading 9506. The PIB release on the 56th GST Council records the cut on sports goods from 12% to 5%. A sports shop must therefore decide for each item whether it is used to play a sport or for general exercise, because the heading number alone does not settle the rate.

Sportswear and sports shoes follow their own tests

Jerseys, track suits, shorts and compression wear are apparel of chapters 61 or 62, and sports shoes are footwear of chapter 64. They are not sports goods for GST purposes. Apparel is taxed at 5% up to 2,500 rupees per piece and 18% above, and footwear at 5% up to 2,500 rupees per pair and 18% above. A sports shop that bills a 3,500 rupee pair of running shoes at the 5% sports goods rate, or a jersey at 18% because it is in the same order as a treadmill, misapplies the rules. Code apparel, footwear and equipment as separate item groups.

Team kits and bundles

Academies and schools often buy a kit containing a bat, pads, gloves, helmet and a kit bag for one price. That is a mixed supply under section 8, and the whole kit is taxed at the highest rate of any item in it. Kit bags of heading 4202 are at 18%, so including the bag at a single price can pull the whole kit to 18%. To keep each item at its own rate, list each item at its own price on the invoice. Personalised jerseys made to a club's order remain apparel and follow the per-piece test on the price charged.

Selling to institutions and gyms

Schools, colleges and government sports bodies buy sports goods, and many deduct TDS under section 51 of the CGST Act when the taxable value under a contract exceeds two lakh fifty thousand rupees. Gyms and fitness centres buying treadmills and weights need a tax invoice with their GSTIN so they can claim input tax credit on capital goods used in their business. Large equipment deliveries need an e-way bill when the value crosses the threshold, and installation of fitness machines sold with the goods forms part of a composite supply taxed at the equipment rate.

Common billing mistakes

  • Billing treadmills, dumbbells and home gym sets at the 5% sports goods rate when they are general exercise equipment at 18%.
  • Treating jerseys and sports shoes as sports goods at 5% regardless of price, ignoring the 2,500 rupee apparel and footwear tests.
  • Selling a cricket kit with an 18% kit bag for one price and billing the whole kit at 5%. for the school.
  • Issuing a counter bill without the gym's GSTIN for a large equipment order, so the buyer cannot claim credit on capital goods. it buys.

Sports goods shop GST invoice: FAQ

What is the GST rate on sports goods?

Sports goods of heading 9506, such as cricket bats, balls, rackets, footballs and hockey sticks, are taxed at 5% from 22 September 2025. Gloves designed for sport are also at 5%. Equipment for general physical exercise such as treadmills, exercise cycles and dumbbells remains at 18%.

Is gym equipment taxed as a sports good?

No. Notification 9/2025 separates articles and equipment for general physical exercise from sports goods within heading 9506. Treadmills, weights, benches and multi-gyms are general exercise equipment taxed at 18%, while equipment used to play a sport is at 5%. Classify each product on what it is used for.

What rate applies to sports jerseys and shoes?

Sports jerseys and track wear are apparel and follow the per-piece test: 5% up to 2,500 rupees and 18% above. Sports shoes follow the per-pair test with the same values. They are not taxed as sports goods, even when sold in a sports shop.

How do I bill a full cricket kit for a school team?

If the kit is sold for a single price, it is a mixed supply and the highest rate in the kit applies. Listing the bat, pads, gloves, helmet and bag separately with their own prices lets each item carry its own rate, which usually lowers the overall tax for the school.
