GST invoice format for an aluminium extrusion manufacturer

An aluminium extruder's GST invoice should describe each profile by die or section number, alloy and temper, finish, length and weight. Aluminium bars, rods and profiles under HSN 7604, tubes under 7608, and fabricated aluminium structures such as window frames under 7610 are taxed at 18% from 22 September 2025. The bill should record theoretical versus actual weight, finish codes for anodising or powder coating, and the LME or billet price basis used for pricing.

Extra fields a aluminium extrusion manufacturer invoice needs

Die or section number
Every profile is identified by a die number. Buyers order by section number, and a wrong die leads to rejection.
Alloy and temper
Mention alloy and temper, such as 6063-T6. Strength and finish depend on them, and buyers specify them for structural and architectural use.
Length and weight per metre
Show profile length and weight per metre. Pricing is per kilogram, and buyers check weight per metre against their specification.
Finish code
Record mill finish, anodised or powder-coated with colour code. Finishing adds cost and must match the order.
Metal price basis
State the billet or LME-based price used for the order. It explains price differences between invoices.
Bundle numbers
Profiles are dispatched in bundles. Bundle numbers and weights make receiving and claims easier.
Packing and protection
Architectural profiles are often wrapped in protective film or paper. Note the packing type, because buyers reject scratched profiles and the packing used helps settle transit damage claims.

GST rules that matter for a aluminium extrusion manufacturer

Profiles, tubes and structures

Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) lists aluminium bars, rods and profiles under 7604, aluminium tubes and pipes under 7608, tube fittings under 7609, and aluminium structures and parts of structures under 7610 in the 18% schedule. Unwrought aluminium under 7601 and aluminium waste and scrap under 7602 are also at 18%. A plant selling plain profiles and fabricated window frames must still use the right heading for each, because GSTR-1 and the buyer's records depend on it.

Theoretical versus actual weight

Extrusions are often priced on theoretical weight per metre, but delivered on weighbridge weight. State which basis is used on the invoice and keep the e-way bill quantity consistent with the invoice. Differences between theoretical and actual weight should be settled through debit or credit notes.

Anodising and powder coating

Finishing is often done by separate units as job work. Profiles sent for anodising or coating move on delivery challans under section 143 and must return within one year. If the extruder buys finishing services, the finisher bills only the service. If the finished profile is sold, the full value, including finishing, is taxed at the profile rate.

Scrap sales and metal recovery

Extrusion produces butt ends, off-cuts and rejected profiles. Selling aluminium scrap requires a separate tax invoice under 7602. Income-tax TCS provisions on sale of scrap may also apply to the seller.

E-way bills for long profiles

Profiles are long and often move on open trucks. Consignments above ₹50,000 need an e-way bill, and the invoice should match the e-way bill quantity and weight.

Billet and die charges

Some buyers pay for new dies used to extrude their custom sections. Raise a separate invoice for die charges when the die is made, and state whether the die stays at your plant. If a buyer supplies its own billets for conversion, the job is a job-work service and the billets and finished profiles move on delivery challans; your invoice covers only the conversion charge. Mixing these models on one invoice makes it impossible to see what was sold and what was processed.

Common billing mistakes

  • Billing fabricated window frames under 7604 instead of aluminium structures under 7610.
  • Using theoretical weight on the invoice and actual weight on the e-way bill without explanation.
  • Not documenting profiles sent for anodising or powder coating on delivery challans.
  • Selling scrap without invoices or TCS where applicable.
  • Leaving out die numbers, which makes it hard for buyers to match profiles to orders.
  • Mixing billet conversion jobs and outright profile sales on one invoice, so the buyer cannot tell what was sold and what was only processed.
  • Charging die costs inside the first order's per-kilogram rate and forgetting to remove them from repeat orders.

Aluminium extrusion manufacturer GST invoice: FAQ

What is the GST rate on aluminium profiles?

Aluminium bars, rods and profiles under heading 7604 are in the 18% schedule from 22 September 2025.

Are aluminium window frames taxed differently?

Fabricated aluminium window and door frames are aluminium structures under heading 7610, also taxed at 18%.

How should I bill anodising charges?

If you sell anodised profiles, include the finishing cost in the profile's taxable value. If you provide anodising only on the customer's profiles, bill it as a job-work service.

Is GST payable on aluminium scrap?

Yes. Aluminium waste and scrap under heading 7602 is in the 18% schedule. A separate tax invoice is required.

Can I bill by theoretical weight?

Yes, if agreed with the buyer. State the basis on the invoice and settle any difference with actual weight through debit or credit notes.

How do I show anodising colour on the invoice?

Add the finish and colour code to the description, such as 'anodised 15 micron, champagne'. Finish affects price and is the first thing an architectural buyer checks on delivery.
