Getting the HSN right among similar-looking items
Electrical goods cluster in chapter 85 but split into headings that buyers and officers check: insulated wires and cables in 8544, switches, sockets, MCBs and connectors for up to 1,000 V in 8536, panels and distribution boards with two or more such devices in 8537, lamps including LED retrofit bulbs in 8539, and complete luminaires such as LED panels and street lights in 9405. In the September 2025 schedules these headings all sit in the 18% list, so the rate rarely changes the bill, but the HSN must still be right; turnover above Rs 5 crore requires six-digit HSN in GSTR-1, and a mis-coded line invites a notice comparing your HSN summary with the buyer's.
Copper price swings and rate-difference invoices
Cable prices follow copper and change weekly. If a price revision is agreed after supply, issue a supplementary (debit) invoice for the increase or a credit note for a reduction, each referring to the original invoice. Silent adjustments in the ledger leave the GST on the original value and confuse the contractor's credit.
Contractors, works contracts and blocked credit
When an electrical contractor uses your goods in a works contract for an immovable property, the contractor may still claim credit because they supply works contract services onward. When the buyer is a factory or builder fitting out its own building, section 17(5) can block that credit for them. This does not change your invoice, but being clear about the buyer's GSTIN and site helps them classify their own credit correctly.
Composition and the electrician counter
Small electrical wholesalers that also run a retail counter sometimes consider composition for the lower 1% rate. The catch is that electricians and contractors, who are a large share of buyers, increasingly ask for a tax invoice so their own clients can claim credit, and a composition dealer can only issue a bill of supply. Another limit is inter-state trade: a composition taxpayer cannot make inter-state outward supplies of goods, which rules it out for wholesalers who ship cable and switchgear to towns across the state border. For most electrical wholesalers, regular registration and a full tax invoice remain the practical choice.
E-way bill on drums and part deliveries
A cable drum alone can exceed Rs 50,000. Where an order is delivered in parts by different vehicles, either raise one invoice and send the balance under delivery challans with separate e-way bills, or raise separate invoices for each delivery. Do not let a vehicle carry goods without a document covering the full value on board.
